The Historic Town of Midleton in East Cork, Ireland has its origins dating back to the 12th century. Midleton derives its name from 'Mainistir na Corann' meaning 'The Abbey of the Coir'. This came from the monastery, which was founded by the Cistercian monks in the early part of the 12th century. In the 19th Century the monastery was destroyed.

The most recent jewel in the crown is the Jameson Heritage Centre, which welcomes tourists from around the world with a complimentary glass of Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Legend has it that it was here in Ireland that whiskey was invented. To this day, the finest whiskey is distilled by the Irish and every year thousands of visitors come to Midleton to taste the magic of Irish whiskey for themselves. This beautiful 18th century distillery has been carefully and lovingly restored. The memorable visit comprises an audio-visual presentation available in six languages and then a guided tour of the old distillery. And after the history comes the tasting. Visitors relax in the atmosphere of a traditional Irish pub to sample the spirit of Ireland for themselves. Afterwards there's a chance to browse in the unique gift shop or relax in the elegant coffee shop.

We had a lovely time in Aherne's townhouse and the tasting menu which we had was delicious. Overall the standard of food was very high. I had booked Ahernes as a birthday weekend away and my only complaint, which is quite small in the grand scheme of things was that I had been told that a cake would be provided on the night we had dinner in the restaurant. Unfortunately, there was an oversight and there was no mention of my Fiancees birthday despite two other tables in the restaurant having birthday also and being given a cake throughout the night - this further highlighted the fact that we got missed out and my Fiancee was alittle disappointed. Aside from this though, we had a lovely time and would certainly recommend this hotel.
Had two very relaxing days in Aherne's which were enjoyed by the fact that the Staff were so friendly and made us feel at home immediately. We enjoyed the food especially the FISH was sad to be going home. Will definitely make a return visit.
